Language Support at Home
It All Begins with Nurturing Your Child’s Language
If your child’s speech seems a bit slow to develop, please don’t worry too much. A child’s language growth begins with the warm, everyday interactions they share with their parents. Studies consistently show that when parents use intentional communication strategies during daily routines, a child’s vocabulary and functional language skills improve significantly.
This page provides research-based, practical language guides specifically designed for families navigating bilingual/multilingual environments or those concerned about language delays.
Language and Context are Inseparable
Language doesn't grow simply by memorizing a list of words; it flourishes as children build meaning through human interaction. In this space, we calmly explore:
- How to make language use enjoyable in bilingual and multilingual homes.
- Practical steps parents can take at home when worried about language delays.
- Creating an environment where language, identity, and culture grow together.
Let’s Clear Up Some Common Language Myths
As a parent, have you ever found yourself worrying about these questions?
- Will being bilingual cause a speech delay? Research consistently shows that using two languages does not slow down development. What matters most is the quality of interaction with parents, not the number of languages.
- Which language should I teach first? It is best to provide rich exposure to both your home language and the community language through meaningful conversation. Studies show no significant difference in when "first words" appear between monolingual and bilingual children.
- What if I’m worried about a delay? Monitor developmental milestones, but look at your child’s total vocabulary across all languages. We recommend a professional evaluation if there are no meaningful words by 12–15 months, or if two-word combinations are extremely limited by 24 months.
- Is mixing languages harmful? Not at all! Code-switching is a natural phenomenon that appears as early as 8–10 months and helps emphasize new vocabulary. Translanguaging allows children to integrate both languages to gain a deeper understanding of concepts.
