Korean-English Bilingual Flashcards! How to Support Bilingual Development at Home

Min Jung Kwon

Children growing up in bilingual environments may experience temporary language delays as they acquire two languages. While this doesn't affect development, it's understandable to be concerned.

One of the most effective tools for helping bilingual children develop, and one that is widely used in schools, is bilingual flashcards.

Today, we'll be looking at bilingual cards that you can use at home!

How can flashcards help bilinguals?

1. Connect two or more languages

Repeated exposure to flashcards containing two or more languages allows children to naturally connect words from both languages and expand their vocabulary. Some words may only be known in Korean, while others may only be known in English. By continually exposing children to unfamiliar words and languages, you can help them become familiar with the language and build confidence.

2. Visual images help learning.

Flashcards are a tool that helps you understand words concretely through visual images. For example, when you read the words "pot" and "pan," you're constantly exposed to pictures, which naturally internalizes the connection between the two words.

When children learn new words, they understand and remember the meaning more easily when they see a visual image alongside it!

3. Provides opportunities for interaction with parents.

Flashcards can be used as a form of play. You can increase interaction by quizzing your child with the cards at home, making language learning fun at any time. You can play Twenty Questions in the language you want your child to excel in, or you can create a hidden object game in a language you're more familiar with. By engaging in activities with your child, you can create an environment where both languages become fluent.

How can I use it?

1. Print : Download and print the flashcards! You can purchase self-coating paper from Amazon and attach the coated cards, or you can attach the cards to paper.

2. Stick it in the kitchen/living room/bathroom : Stick it in a place where your child can easily see the card, or cut it out and use it like a card.

[Example: Put all the printed cards on the refrigerator so your child can see the words every time he or she comes into the kitchen.]

[Example: Cut out the cards and stick them next to the objects. This will help your child match the words with the objects more easily.]

3. Matching activity : You can have your child look for real objects together and say the words on the flashcards, or you can have your child look at the card images on the wall and say the words along with them.

Encourage conversation through questions : Keep asking questions like, “What was the English word for the remote control in the living room?” to encourage your child to ask questions about words they don’t know!
