Bilingualism: What are the positive effects on our children's brains?
Min Jung KwonShare

Hello, I'm BCBA Park Hye-ji . Many parents today are very interested in providing a bilingual environment for their children .
This is because there is a growing body of research showing that bilingualism not only provides linguistic advantages , but can also have positive effects on identity formation , social , emotional , educational, and cognitive development . Research on how bilingualism affects executive function is particularly noteworthy .
So what are executive functions? And how can bilingual children benefit from them ?
Today, we'll take a look at the impact of bilingualism on infants' executive functions through a paper by Diane Poulin-Dubois ' research team .
What is executive functioning?
Executive functions refer to the cognitive skills we need to set goals, make plans, and solve problems . Key components include attention control , impulse control , problem solving , working memory , and flexible thinking .
This function develops from infancy and grows rapidly until adolescence .
The Relationship Between Bilingualism and Executive Function

Children raised in a bilingual environment develop selective attention and impulse control skills because they must choose to use one language while both language systems are always active .
According to this study , bilingual children are superior to monolingual children in their ability to suppress unnecessary information and focus on important information . This explains why bilingual children show an advantage in the Stroop task, which presents a " conflict situation . "
Research results
In this study, 24- month-old bilingual children performed better on the Stroop task, suggesting that bilingualism has positive effects even at this young age .
Although bilingual children's performance did not differ significantly from monolingual children's on all tasks , their advantage in conflict suppression suggests that bilingualism may provide cognitive advantages .
To my parents

It is very positive news for parents that children raised in bilingual environments are likely to demonstrate higher executive functioning skills .
Because executive function plays a crucial role in children's problem-solving , emotional regulation , and learning abilities , providing a bilingual environment can be beneficial not only for strengthening children's executive function but also for their overall development .
1) Consistency of language exposure:
Create a natural environment at home that allows for consistent exposure to both languages. This can be achieved by using both languages in everyday conversation, reading books, or providing opportunities to interact with both languages in a variety of situations .
2) Accepting two languages :
Infants and toddlers are capable of fully understanding and distinguishing between two languages. Rather than worrying about the potential confusion that bilingualism can cause, it's important to increase opportunities for them to understand and accept a variety of expressions . If your child makes mistakes or becomes confused during the process, naturally correct them and encourage them.
3) Recognize the impact of bilingualism on emotional stability:
A bilingual environment can actually contribute to a child's emotional stability. When a child can communicate freely with both parents and understand diverse cultural backgrounds, their self-esteem improves and they gain confidence in forming social relationships. These benefits play a significant role not only in executive function but also in a child's overall development, so it's recommended to consistently support bilingual education and provide a bilingual environment.
Bilingualism isn't a skill that can be acquired overnight . Because there are languages suited to each stage of life, mastering one language perfectly takes time . However, children raised in a bilingual environment can develop their executive functions more effectively , so be sure to consistently encourage and support your child throughout this long journey .
I'll be back with another interesting paper topic ! Thank you !
