Calming Corner: A Space for Children's Emotional Stability and Learning Readiness

Min Jung Kwon

Today, I'd like to talk about the "Calming Corner," a space I often recommend when visiting homes, preschools, kindergartens, and other settings. Some of you may have already seen this space in your institution. Let's talk about why a Calming Corner is necessary and how to best utilize it.

Creating an environment where children feel emotionally stable and can focus on learning is a crucial task for parents, teachers, and therapists alike. Here are some helpful resources: This is Calming Corner .

What kind of space is Calming Corner?

The Calming Corner is a special space designed to help children regulate their various emotions. It teaches children how to calm their emotions voluntarily, allowing them to focus on their studies.

This space should be located in a quiet and uncluttered place, and should be decorated with soft colors, comfortable chairs, cushions, etc.

Why do we need a Calming Corner?

Children experience intense and diverse emotions as they grow, but the skills to regulate and manage them require training.

Especially during emotionally challenging moments, the Calming Corner can provide a safe haven for children. Frequently used in ABA, this space helps children develop self-regulation skills and find emotional stability.

- Developing Emotion Regulation Skills : Through the Calming Corner, children learn to recognize and manage their emotions. This self-awareness builds their ability to remain calm even in stressful situations.

- Provide a safe space : Provide a safe space where children can calm down when experiencing intense emotions. In this safe space, you can help children learn positive coping skills through the Calming Corner.

- Improved self-regulation : This helps develop self-regulation, one of the goals of ABA. In the Calming Corner, children learn to regulate their emotions and manage stress.

- Improved Learning Readiness : Children who find inner balance through emotional regulation find it much easier to focus on learning! Children who participate in Calming Corner in the classroom experience significantly greater group participation and increased concentration in class. We recommend actively utilizing Calming Corner at home when your children need a moment of calm during their studies!

To properly configure and use Calming Corner, it's important to consider the following factors:

- Choose the right location : Place it in a quiet, less crowded area of the classroom or home so children can calm down in a quiet environment.

- Creating a comfortable environment : Create a space that feels stable by placing soft-colored wallpaper, comfortable chairs, cushions, etc.

- Provide a variety of calming tools : Provide stress balls, drawing tools, emotion-related books, etc. to help children calm their emotions in a variety of ways.

- Set clear usage guidelines : Calming Corner lets you know when it's there, so you can ensure your kids only use it for 'emotion regulation' and 'learning focus'.

- Encourage voluntary use : This isn't a place for punishment! Encourage children to use the space voluntarily, and make it a space they can come to on their own when they want and need it.

- Set a time limit : Use a timer (a clock timer is great, but it's also a good idea to choose a timer that's more intuitive for kids, like an hourglass or oil timer) to set an appropriate usage time so that your kids can effectively calm down within the set time in the Calming Corner.

- Include emotion recognition tools : Provide emotion charts or posters to help children visually recognize and express their emotions.

- Regular practice : Practice calming techniques regularly so you have them available whenever you need them.

Please use it for your child's emotional well-being!

Calming Corner is a great way to help children develop the ability to regulate their emotions and create an environment where they can focus on their studies.

Parents and therapists can utilize the Calming Corner to provide an environment where children can focus more on activities that require emotional stability. This experience fosters positive learning experiences and allows children to generalize self-regulation skills across diverse settings.

This is a simple method that can be applied at home or in the classroom, so if necessary, we recommend talking to a professional who knows your child well to discuss where to create a Calming Corner and what items would be good to place there!
