[미국 ABA] ABA 데이터, 치료에도 필요하지만 "치료확보"를 위해서도 필요합니다 - Everbloom Path - Parent Coaching

[American ABA] ABA data is necessary for treatment, but it's also essential for "ensuring treatment."

Hello, I am BCBA Minjeong Kwon.

In the process of supporting children through ABA therapy, I've often seen cases where data collection is difficult and time-consuming, and people wonder , "Is it really that necessary?"

In fact, in Korea, I only used data to set treatment goals and monitor my child's growth, but in the US, it was fascinating to see how it was used for so many different purposes. Today, I'd like to introduce how ABA data is utilized in the US.

1. The impact of ABA data on a child's treatment

I think you've probably read this part in many places already.

<Example: Graph showing a decrease in a specific problem behavior>

ABA data collects information about how a child learns new skills or responds to intervention techniques for problem behaviors during each session. This data can be used to do a number of things.

  • Progress Monitoring : Data helps therapists assess whether a child is progressing or needs adjustments. Each piece of data is more than just a number; it's crucial information reflecting a child's development.
  • Individualized Plan : Because each child's needs are unique, ABA therapy uses data to tailor treatment to each child's needs. For example, a child with a slower learning speed may have a slightly different learning curve than a child with a slower learning speed.
  • Treatment Plan Adjustment : By continuously analyzing the collected data, the therapist sets new goals and adjusts the plan based on the child's strengths to identify ways to address the problem. Rather than relying on a gut feeling, the therapist precisely analyzes the time, frequency, and intervals measured in each session to adjust the plan.

2. Why ABA data plays a crucial role in large systems

In the United States, ABA data plays a vital role not only in providing treatment to children, but also in enabling schools and insurance companies to provide necessary resources and support.

1) School and IEP (Individualized Education Plan)

Schools use ABA data to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

It also helps establish educational goals and discuss intervention methods for behaviors of concern. Furthermore, teachers and school staff use this data to discuss the child's needs, including one-on-one support, recess, and communication support.

If your child's challenging behaviors require modifications to their IEP goals or additional supports (such as therapeutic support), you can use ABA data to analyze your child and gather data, such as through a Functional Behavioral Assessment (a test used to determine the cause of a child's behavior), to adjust their IEP goals and provide a basis for requesting support.

2) Program evaluation and resource allocation

Also, as mentioned above, ABA data is necessary to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the program in progress.

Analyzing the collected data helps us determine which interventions are successful and which areas need improvement. This analysis also helps schools and clinics determine which resources (reinforcers, locations, teaching aids, sensory aids, etc.) the child needs.

3) Insurance support and extension

I'm not sure if ABA data is submitted in Korea to receive treatment support, but in the US, therapists are required to provide detailed data and reports on a child's progress in order to receive ongoing funding for ABA therapy.

Reports based on this data are crucial for proving that treatment is essential and effective for the child . Without this data, families may no longer be able to access ABA services.

ABA data also provides insurance companies with evidence to justify the intensity of services. It's crucial for determining whether a child needs ongoing ABA services—one hour, five hours, or 20 hours.

..................................................................

In this way, ABA data in the United States is needed to go beyond simple behavior monitoring and provide essential services to children.

I understand that ABA services are increasingly being covered by insurance in Korea. Could there come a day when ABA data becomes an important factor in determining insurance support in Korea?
