Token Economy, It Can Be Used in Such a Variety

Min Jung Kwon

Today, I'd like to talk about the token economy, a concept we see so often around us. I'll discuss how we can effectively utilize it in our daily lives.

What is a token economy?

A token economy is a system where children receive small rewards (tokens) for good behavior. These tokens can be collected and exchanged for larger rewards.

The most common ones are "praise stickers ." When your child cleans up after themselves or dresses themselves, they receive a sticker. Once they collect a certain number of stickers, they're rewarded with a favorite toy, snack, or playtime.

The "salary" adults receive could also be considered a form of token economy. Similarly, a salary is a reward (money) for working, and that money can be used to purchase desired goods or services.

Working is an act of earning a salary, and that salary acts as a token, which is then converted into various rewards (goods, experiences, services, etc.). In this sense, the token economy is a concept that can be applied to various situations in everyday life.

What are the benefits of using a token economy?

1) Provide a clear structure : A token economy sets clear expectations for children. Saying, "If you clean up your toys today, you'll get one 00," gives children a clear understanding of what actions they must take to earn a token. This clear structure reduces confusion, and less confusion leads to greater motivation to perform the action.

2) Immediate feedback : If you give your child a token immediately after performing a desired behavior, he or she will immediately recognize that his or her behavior is positive. This immediate reward will help your child perform the behavior more often.

3) Customized for each child, versatile: Tokens can be made from any material. Even paperclips or scraps of paper lying around the house will do, as long as your child enjoys them! They're easy to carry and can be used with a variety of materials, making them easy to adapt to each child's needs and circumstances. Rewards can also be used in a variety of settings and for a variety of purposes.

3) Teach delayed gratification : Children learn patience by collecting tokens and waiting for a desired reward. This also helps develop self-regulation skills!

4) Increased focus and attention : Children sometimes lose focus when there is no immediate reward. However, if you use tokens and show them how to collect tokens, their attention will increase and they will be able to maintain positive behavior consistently.

Types of rewards/reinforcements available in the token economy

It's important to decide in advance what rewards you'll offer your child. Choose the one below that will most motivate your child.

1) Physical Rewards : Your child's favorite items, such as toys, books, or art supplies, can be great rewards. Creating a list of rewards in advance, where your child can collect tokens to obtain their favorite items, can help motivate them.

2) Edible rewards : Snacks and small treats are a powerful motivator, especially for young children. However, it's best to use them in conjunction with other rewards, rather than relying solely on snacks.

3) Activity-based rewards : You can reward your child for activities they enjoy, such as playing, going to the park, or watching a video. These activities can be both enjoyable and rewarding.

4) Privileges : Special privileges like sleeping in late, extra screen time, or choosing what to eat for dinner can also be great rewards. For older children, especially, the ability to make their own choices can be a huge motivator.

5) Digital Tokens : Tokens themselves can come in a variety of forms, such as stickers, chips, or points. Some parents also utilize apps that use digital tokens to record and reinforce their child's behavior ( see more about these apps >> Link ).

How about using these tokens too?

Tickets : Like amusement park tickets, you can add fun by giving your child tickets when they perform certain actions and letting them collect them to exchange for rewards.

Fake Money : Letting your child exchange the fake money he or she has collected for a favorite toy or snack can also help him or her learn economic concepts naturally.

Puzzles : Another method that children enjoy is giving them a puzzle piece every time they perform a positive behavior, and then giving them a reward pictured on the puzzle when they complete the entire puzzle.

Token economies offer many fun ways for parents and children to engage with, and can effectively encourage positive behavior in children.

If parents observe their child's behavior and offer both praise and tokens, their child will gradually improve their behavior. Use creative tokens to help your child become more interested and develop a greater anticipation for the reward!
