Halloween Special! Skills Checklist for Kids to Build Independence and Enjoyment

Min Jung Kwon

Thanks to Halloween, every day is bustling.

As you know, Halloween is a great opportunity for children to develop independence, social skills, and sensory adaptability. Today, we'll create a Halloween skills checklist and explore how parents, caregivers, and therapists can find activities tailored to children's development.

What is a Halloween checklist?

This is a time when there are many activities that help children develop independence and a variety of developmental skills, such as choosing clothes, receiving candy, and social interaction.

What are some goals that your child might find a bit challenging, but can quickly achieve? Creating a checklist and having them enjoy achieving those goals while watching them can have a positive impact on their sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.

What could be included on my child's personalized Halloween checklist?

Here are some fun Halloween-related activities for kids to practice. Help them develop their skills while having fun and trying new things!

1. Assist with selecting and wearing clothes

  • Choosing a Costume : What costume did your child choose? Show them various pictures, provide options, and help them make their decision.
  • Practice putting on and taking off the costume : Practice putting on the costume for a few days before Halloween. If your child is not used to wearing costumes, they may need more practice.
  • Adapting to the senses : Some costumes contain materials or accessories that can be uncomfortable. Replace them with less irritating ones, or practice wearing the costume several times over short intervals to help your child become more comfortable with it.

2. Practice social skills and communication.

  • Greetings : Practice greetings like "Happy Halloween!" or "Trick or Treat." You can practice at home through role-playing, or you can practice together while reading a book or watching a video.
  • Expressing Gratitude : After receiving candy, it's important to say "Thank you!" Practice communicating by practicing saying it or teaching your child alternative gestures.
  • Asking for Help : Children may need to ask for help during Halloween situations. Practicing ahead of time will help them feel more confident asking for help during trick-or-treating situations.

3. Following directions and safety techniques

  • Safety Rules : Halloween requires safety rules, such as staying with a guardian, looking both ways when crossing the street, and standing in line. Reviewing the safety rules in advance with a checklist will help you remember and practice them.
  • Describing yourself : What if you were separated from your caregiver? Can you tell them your name, address, phone number, etc. when asked? Practice with them just in case!
  • Following directions : Why not practice things like "Wait" or "Stay next to me" beforehand? For children who have difficulty following directions, you can use First-Then cards to provide clearer instructions.

Create a Halloween Skills Checklist

Because each child's needs and developmental level are different, it's important to adapt the checklist to your child's development. Here's a simple example:

technology target Note
Choosing a costume Deciding between 1-2 options Need pictures to help me choose?
Say hello to your neighbors Saying "Trick or Treat" Practice with your family in advance
Safety rules Walking next to a guardian Practice standing within arm's reach
Sensory practice Wearing some of the costumes Increase gradually to allow sensory adaptation

>> Final Tips for a Successful Halloween

  • Positive reinforcement : Praise children for even seemingly small successes! This increases their motivation to be independent.
  • Stay flexible : Of course, you might not be able to perfectly execute the actions you set out to do this season. Understand that each child's pace is different, and look forward to next Halloween even more!
  • Practice makes perfect! Little by little, consistent practice always helps. Practice activities your child struggles with little by little at home. :)

The checklist we talked about today is one that can be used all year round.

I hope the Halloween event will make children even more happy and entertained. I hope you create precious memories with your children and have a happy Halloween!
