ABA Therapy and Technology: Introduction to various apps and software that help children learn

Min Jung Kwon

As technology develops, various programs that help ABA ( Applied Behavior Analysis ) treatment appear , and the tools that parents , therapists , and children can use seem to have become more diverse . As the world is changing so rapidly, I think it is important for both adults and children to keep pace and use these technologies well , so I am always interested in using them .

Today, we will introduce apps and software that can help children learn.

ABA Therapy Recommended Apps

1. ABC Observation:

This is an app for observing your child's behavior . This app would be perfect to use when doing FBA .

ABC (antecedents , actions , consequences ) , motivation for behavior , function of behavior, etc. are entered in advance and can only be checked during the observation period . If you set a timer , it was nice to be able to check how many actions occurred during that time .

You can check what antecedents and results your child's behavior led to, and it was made quite intuitively so it wasn't difficult to use . It seems appropriate to use to determine the cause of a child's behavior . It was also convenient and great to be able to immediately send Excel files or graphs about the observation results .

2. Reward Chart:

It's an app that can be used instead of compliment stickers . It's pretty simple and easy to use , and it's easy to set dates, actions, etc. In addition, when you put stickers on, you get an effect that children will like , and I recommend it because I think children will have a lot of fun putting stickers on . You can set the number of stickers as you want !

However, I would like to set a separate number of stickers for each action ( 5 for homework , 10 for saying “thank you, etc. ), but that doesn’t seem to work .

3. Chores

It's my favorite app . You can set various actions you want your child to perform , and easily set the number of times they are completed .

For example , if you add an action called “ Follow instructions without refusal ,” and complete it once, you will collect stars . And if you perform it 3 times, it will be completed and the task will be completed . Then you can collect the V sign .

This is an app that allows you to purchase the rewards promised to your child using the stars and V signs collected in this way . You can decide together with your child .

Other learning tools recommended!

1. Digital flash card , Bitsboard

Flash cards are useful for encouraging more interaction and making boring learning fun . We also recommend Bitsboard, which is used to increase children's motivation .

You can customize it to fit your child's needs , or you can use pre-made flashcards . It includes both pictures and sounds , such as sequence, yes or no, related items, categorization , and emotion cards, so I hope you can help your child learn by touching, listening, and speaking .

2. Virtual Reality (VR) Program :

While various virtual reality ABA programs are coming out , we would like to introduce this virtual reality program that was widely covered in the New York Times . This is a program where children develop social skills by simulating real situations .

Social skills and adaptive behaviors, such as crossing a crosswalk, can be practiced in a safe and controlled environment , while things like playing card games and various conversation skills can be practiced in a virtual classroom or playground .

Remote support - Telehealth ABA Therapy

Also, if we talk about technology and ABA , we cannot avoid talking about Telehealth . With the advancement of remote services, a world has emerged where ABA therapy can also be performed non-face-to-face .

In the United States, in particular, because the country is so large, there are many studies showing that Telehealth has been very effective for families who have difficulty receiving face-to-face services . Everbloom also provides online and offline support to many people who want to promote their children's development at home through online lectures , parent education , video feedback, etc.

Future trends in ABA technology

As new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning continue to emerge, ABA therapy also appears to be accepting various technologies.

Although there are still many shortcomings, future AI- based services may provide individualized learning experiences and analysis , and suggest the most appropriate intervention method for the child.

Children who have difficulty concentrating or have difficulty moving may be able to learn and participate more through VR services . It seems important to continue to think and explore whether there are things that can bring the most efficient and enjoyable experience to our children and what their pros and cons are .
